This safety directive applies to rowing regattas held at the northerly Zeekoevlei Yacht Club and the southerly WCR Shed courses, as well as during training. Other rules may apply when other boating events are held at this location. Rowers are to remain vigilant of other users of the vlei at all times.

Traffic moves in a clockwise direction. During regattas, traffic is to comply with the red arrows; while during training traffic is to comply with the black arrows.

Crews excluded at the start are to row down the course to the finish, or as instructed by the umpire or safety marshal.

Crews are to clear the finish and return to the launch area as soon after their race as practically possible.

Strong northerly and southerly winds can blow at this venue. If caught in strong winds and you cannot row to the launch area, rather let the wind push you to the bank and then beach your boat.

Traffic moving to the start is to remain on the eastern side of the dam, while traffic moving to the finish is to remain in the buoyed course or directly west thereof i.e. traffic moves in an anti-clockwise direction. This applies to both training and racing.

Crews waiting at the 500m, 1 000m or 1 500m mark are to remain off the course and remain vigilant of crews rowing further up the course.

Crews excluded at the start are to row down to the finish directly west of the course, or as instructed by the umpire or safety marshal.

Boats are to remain behind the finish line until the race has been cleared by the umpire, and crews instructed to return to the launching area.

When the dam is low, a number of tree stumps are exposed. Rowers need to be aware of these areas and remain away from them.

All boats must remain at least 100m from the dam wall.

Traffic moving to the start is to remain on the northern and / or eastern bank, while traffic moving to the finish is to remain on the southern and / or western bank i.e. traffic moves in a clockwise direction.

At the launch area, crews must cross over to the northern bank immediately when safe to do so.

The venue is also used by motor boats and rowers need to remain vigilant of other boats on the water.

No rowing boat is allowed north of the red buoys at the dam wall.

Traffic moving to the start is to remain on the western bank, while traffic moving to the finish is to remain in the temporary buoyed course or on the eastern bank i.e. traffic moves in an anti-clockwise direction.

Crews moving to the start need to be aware of the jetty and boats launched from the jetty.

Crews excluded at the start are to row down to the finish directly east of the course, or as instructed by the umpire or safety marshal.

The venue is also used by motor and sail boats and rowers need to remain vigilant of other boats on the water.

The area is also used to harvest oysters. The oyster beds are periodically moved, and crews need to be on the look out for them.

The V&A Waterfront is a working harbour, used by all manner of boats. The annual regatta is held at this venue by kind permission of the harbour master. His – or his representatives – instructions are to be adhered to immediately and at all times.

Only experienced coxes may cox at this regatta

No rowing boats may pass under or east of the Clock Tower Bridge.

Movement from the jetty to the start, from the start to the finish and from the finish to the jetty is controlled by the umpires and safety marshals on the water. Their instructions are to be obeyed immediately and at all times.
